Year Finale: 2025 Wraps Up, 2026 on the Horizon
Reflecting on the close of 2025 and looking ahead to 2026. Lessons, hopes and what the new year may hold for India.

2025 Year at Its End
The last day of 2025 feels heavy. Not because anything suddenly ended, but because the year has been full of reminders — small, sharp and loud of how fragile and uneven life can be. Every few weeks, a headline grabbed attention, only to fade while the next crisis or story arrived. The year did not shock us in one moment; it unfolded slowly, through repeated patterns, through things that made us uneasy, things we hoped would change, and things that forced us to notice what we had ignored.
Democracy and Dissent
The Air India plane crash in June killed hundreds and reminded everyone that safety is never automatic, that systems need constant attention. The Pahalgam terror attack again brought insecurity into focus, exposing gaps even when preparedness was promised. In Delhi, the Red Fort blast shook the capital and tightened the sense of caution in public spaces. Meanwhile, Delhi’s AQI reaching hazardous levels reminded us that everyday threats of pollution and health risks are often quieter but no less serious.
Progress, Slowly
Economically, India overtaking Japan to become the fourth-largest economy signalled growth, even if it did not erase the inequalities and daily struggles that still exist.
Global and Cultural Reflections
Globally, 2025 was among the hottest years on record, a reminder that climate change is urgent and immediate. At the same time, voices in literature, film and cultural forums reminded us why reflection matters — art keeps us human, even in the middle of disaster.
What We Learned
2025 taught us that headlines are not just stories but mirrors. They show what we protect, what we ignore and where we fall short. If there is hope for the future, it lies in noticing these patterns, in steady effort, in empathy and in trying to improve the systems that touch everyone’s life.
