Captain Shreyas Iyer: Mumbai named, Shreyas Iyer for remaining matches in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26

Indian Team’s Vice-Captain, Shreyas Iyer is set to return to the ground after 73 days. Appearing first time in three months in Mumbai Jersey’s. He had named as Mumbai Captain for upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, as Shardul Thakur is injured.

After Mumbai’s regular skipper Shardul Thakur was ruled out of the tournament due to injury, Shreyas Iyer is set to take charge of the Mumbai team in their must-win matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Jaipur.

Iyer is returning after recovering from a spleen injury that sidelined him for nearly three months. Time and again, he has proven his ability as an experienced international cricketer with strong leadership credentials. Known for his calmness under pressure and sharp understanding of the game, Iyer brings stability to the dressing room of Mumbai. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is in full confidence under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, Mumbai will continue to play with determination and uphold the rich legacy of Mumbai cricket.

These two matches of Vijay Hazare is crucial for Shreyas Iyer, as he is making a comeback after three months, but he’s still subjected to the fitness clearance. Shreyas Iyer before the New Zealand series which is starting from 11th of January, is appearing on the ground on Tuesday for Mumbai.

Mumbai currently sit on 16 points in Group C after five matches. They need one win from their remaining fixtures to qualify for the knockout stage. Despite a 128-run defeat to Maharashtra, Mumbai still hold a healthy net run rate of +1.293, which keeps them in a strong position.

The squad has also been bolstered by the inclusion of Shashank Atrade, a 34-year-old off-spinner. Atrade has played just two List-A matches, in which he has taken one wicket at an average of 115.00.

Meanwhile, Sarfraz Khan has emerged as Mumbai’s leading run-scorer in the tournament so far, amassing 220 runs from three matches at an average of 111. He missed the last match against Maharashtra due to quadriceps pain. Sarfraz had suffered a similar injury last year, but the 28-year-old is expected to return for the upcoming matches against Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday and Punjab on Thursday.
