Debt Drama: On Rajpal Yadav Surrendering Himself To Tihar Jail
Actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail after Delhi High Court denied further relief in long-running cheque bounce case involving ₹5 crore loan.

Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav, renowned for his comic roles made it to headlines when he surrendered before authorities at Tihar Jail after Delhi High Court refused to extend deadline for him to report to jail after repeated delays in complying with earlier orders. This was in connection with his long-running cheque bounce case. The case involved the actor borrowing an inital amount of ₹5cr in 2010 from a firm named Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. Later when multiple cheques of repayment were bounced, complaints were lodged against Yadav under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. A Trial Court’s verdict convicted him and his wife, sending him to prison for 6 months. However, the sentence was later upheld in 2024 on appeal, under condition that the actor settles the dues. It was repeatedly noted by the High Court that Yadav missed the repayment deadlines. Hence after one last extension earlier this month, Yadav was ordered to surrender himself.

Celebrities often avoid such outcomes because they have resources, lawyers and connections. In this case, Yadav’s repeated failures to follow through on court orders were critical.
This news might tremble the very industry that Yadav comes from. Uptill now, no major statement from any of Yadav’s Film aquaintances is recieved. Such incidents do affect the film markets. Before surrendering, Yadav made a brief emotional statement saying he did not have the money to pay the dues and that he could see no other way. What’s underlined is that how Rajpal Yadav was duly praised as an actor by big names of the industry. Yet when he stood on a low ground, no hand, purportedly was extended in support.
