Arshad Warsi Reflects on Hulchul, Priyadarshan, and a Love That Defied Barriers
Arshad Warsi remains one of Hindi cinema’s most loved and versatile actors.
Audiences still remember him fondly as Circuit from Munnabhai MBBS.The role cemented his place as a natural performer with comic brilliance.
Recently, Arshad shared his experience working with director Priyadarshan. He spoke honestly about his journey in the 2003 film Hulchul.
The opportunity came to him through late writer Neeraj Vora.At that stage, Arshad wanted a shift from repetitive comedy roles. He aimed to explore stronger, serious, and more impactful characters.
When Neeraj Vora mentioned Priyadarshan as the director, Arshad felt intrigued.Arshad immediately asked about the nature of the role.
Neeraj Vora described it as similar to Akshay Kumar’s part in Hera Pheri.Arshad assumed it was a substantial and central character.
Trusting the description, he agreed to do the film.During the shoot, reality slowly unfolded before him.
He realized he was playing a friend’s role, not the main character. The role turned out to be a supporting one.
This revelation left him disappointed and emotionally unsettled. He also recalled an uncomfortable costume experience from the film.
The shirt given to him resembled a nightie more than a proper outfit. He felt awkward and dissatisfied during those moments on set.
However, Arshad clarified that he does not blame Priyadarshan. He believes the director may not have known about his discomfort.
Beyond cinema, Arshad’s personal life reflects resilience and love.He comes from a Muslim family and married Maria Goretti, who is Christian.

They eventually accepted him, believing no one suited Maria better.Arshad also shared their love story with warmth and honesty.
He first met Maria at St. Xavier’s College during a competition.Their bond deepened when Maria began doing theatre plays with him.
