Shyam Benegal, the celebrated filmmaker who spearheaded the Indian parallel cinema motion of the Nineteen Seventies and Eighties, has handed away on the age of 90. Recognized for his lifelike storytelling and incisive social commentary, Benegal’s work broke away from the conventions of mainstream Indian cinema, leaving an indelible mark on the trade.
He died at Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital, the place he had been admitted to the intensive care unit shortly after his ninetieth birthday on 14 December. His daughter, Pia Benegal, confirmed that he had been affected by persistent kidney illness.
Benegal is survived by his spouse, Nira Benegal, and daughter, Pia.
With a profession spanning a long time, Benegal was awarded 18 Nationwide Movie Awards and is remembered for his iconic movies corresponding to Ankur, Nishant, Manthan, Bhumika, Mandi, Junoon, and Arohan. These movies explored themes of social inequality, gender, and sophistication, incomes him widespread acclaim.
